Peek to Pique: Falling for Fin by Jackie Ashenden

In honor of debut author Jackie Ashenden’s first release, today’s Peek to Pique spotlights Falling for Fin, a contemporary romance that features a broken heroine who decides to take back her life… with the help of her gorgeous, surfer-blond friend, Finn.

"Falling for Finn" by Jackie AshendenShe didn’t take her gaze from the floor. “I’m kind of scared about this.”

Something clenched hard inside him at the bald honesty of the statement. At the admission.

“That makes two of us.”

Slowly, she lifted her gaze. Met his. “I thought you weren’t scared of anything.”

“I’m scared of disappointing you. Of frightening you.”

She blinked, as if that wasn’t an answer she’d expected. “I guess if you go slow, it’ll be okay.”

Slow. He wasn’t sure if he could do that. Not after so many years of wanting. Wanting and not having. Yet that’s what she needed.

Finn thought for a minute. “Perhaps you need a safe word.”

“A safe word?” A surprised look on her face. “But isn’t that for bondage type of stuff?” And then, surprise giving way to fear. “I don’t want—”

“No, relax. Christ, I’m not thinking that. All I meant was you having a way of letting me know if anything’s getting too much for you.”

One dark brow rose. “Stop doing that isn’t enough for you?”

Finn stared at her, the reality of what they were about to do sinking slowly into him. The reality of what he needed. And what she needed from him.

“No,” he said. “No, it’s not.”

Peek to Pique: Hidden Heat by Leah Braemel

Happy Sunday! This week’s Peek to Pique is from a book I just finished reading: Hidden Heat. If you’re new to RtR, Peek to Pique is a weekly feature I created to share snippets of my current read, as well as books on my TBR shelf. The point is to give readers a glimpse (peek) of a book in the hopes to entice (pique) them to add it to their own TBR. A peek to pique your interest. Get it? What can I say, I’m a sucker for alliteration.

"Hidden Heat" by Leah BraemelThe murmuring swelled as they walked into the rotunda. Sandy didn’t need to take off the blindfold to imagine all eyes focusing on her.

She’d always laughed when her friends talked about having a nightmare of being forced to walk naked down the street. No laughter came to her now. She gripped Troy’s arm harder. If she ran down the hallway, could she find her clothes? Not that she had her car here to make a getaway in, but maybe she could find a phone to call a cab?

No. This was one of the things she’d put on her bucket list. She’d not run away like a coward. Besides, as she’d told Troy, he’d make sure she had fun. He wouldn’t let anything bad happen.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Jocelyne’s voice sounded far away, as if perhaps she were on the stairs or perhaps up on one of the balconies that ringed the room. “May I present Miss S., who joins us for her initiation tonight.”

Following Troy’s murmured instructions, Sandy walked up the three steps onto the dais and wrapped her hands around the silk ropes. But when she was instructed to place one foot on the jewelled platform, a woman’s laugh floated down from the balcony. Oh God, she was really doing this. In front of an audience.

Peek to Pique: The Search by Nora Roberts

Peek to Pique

Welcome to the first edition of “Peek to Pique,” a weekly feature I created to share snippets of my current read, as well as books on my TBR shelf. The point of “Peek to Pique” is simple: to give readers a glimpse (peek) of a book in the hopes to entice (pique) them to add it to their own TBR. A peek to pique your interest. Get it? What can I say, I’m a sucker for alliteration. Without further ado, this week’s peek is from Nora Robert’s The Search.

As they came out of the woods, she looked up at the sky. “It’s cooling off. I could probably use the kindling. A nice fire, a glass of wine–of course, I won’t be able to get the bottle out of a beautiful cabinet, but I’ll live. I won’t be inviting you in, either.”
“Do you think if I wanted to finish up what we started back there I’d wait for an invitation?”
“No,” she said after a moment. “I should find that arrogant and off-putting. I have no idea why I don’t. Why don’t you want to finish what we started back there?”
He smiled at her. “You’ll be thinking about that, won’t you? I like your house.”
Baffled, she turned to study it as he was. “My house?”
